These tales were written over a period of approximately 20 years.
Many were created late at night, during the middle hours of a "6 to 9" shift (6pm to 9 am), painstakingly typed with two fingers. (Every firefighter was required to be able to type enough to produce a readable shift report.)

Not all the stories are about Engine 281.
Some report on Fred's experiences as one of the first (unofficial) Americans to enter Hiroshima after the bombing.
Others are about his friends in the iron trade (his side job).
